Milling Tool Radius Compensation with Cleaning Pass

The task of the radius compensation with subsequent so-called cleaning pass lies in the dimensional accuracy of the workpiece and in the optimization of the surface.

If the radius compensation is not performed or is not performed exactly, depending on the milling cutter diameter, then the dimensions of the workpiece do not correspond to the set values. A final cleaning pass is crucial for the surface finish of the milling edges, which are thereby deburred and smoothed. The cleaning pass is used to reach the desired set value of the workpiece.

The dynamic milling radius correction already shows the corrected paths on the OptiScout work surface in relation to the object contour. A dashed line indicates the desired size of the workpiece; An additional continuous contour shows the tool compensation and a further continuous line shows the contour which is decisive for the cleaning pass.

An intuitive interface ensures that all settings necessary for the milling process are made quickly. By means of profiles all settings relevant for the milling process, e.g. milling tool diameter, spindle speed, radius compensation, direction of rotation during milling, etc. can be predefined. Drivers adapted to the different machines ensure high-quality output. For example: OptiScout's device drivers use arcs instead of lines, if the milling controller supports this.

Note: Another element, extremely important for professional milling, is the use of so-called start tool paths (Lead in/Lead out).
